Cornell University welcomes applications from qualified international students. The university celebrates the great diversity and global conversations that take place on its historic, idyllic campus in Ithaca, New York. Applicants include international students who have moved among several countries, American citizens who have lived for many years abroad, and non-U.S. citizens studying in the United States. Applications are read based on where a student attends school, not by citizenship status.

International students will follow the same application process as other first-year and transfer applicants. Admissions decisions are need-aware, meaning that students will be evaluated for admission with consideration of the ability to pay educational costs. As a result, applicants who indicate that they do not intend to apply for financial aid are not eligible to apply for financial aid at any point while an undergraduate at Cornell. Students who intend to receive financial aid should indicate as such when completing the application. Financial aid applicants should competed the CSS profile by the deadline.

International students should submit SAT or ACT scores, along with relevant Subject Test scores. These tests cannot be waived with completion of IB, A-levels, or other international credentials. Applicants for whom English is not the fist language must also submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. Successful applicants will have a TOEFL score of 100 on an Internet-based exam or 600 on a paper exam. An IELTS score should be at least a 7. Students who receive at least a 670 on the Critical Reading Section of the old SAT exam or a 35 on the new exam may be exempted from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.

Successful applicants will submit at least three years of secondary school records, with subjects studied and marks received listed for each subjects. Transcripts must be official and in English. Supporting documents should not be sent until the application has been received by the admissions department. It is recommended that students do not send materials in plastic covers or multiple envelopes, or bind materials in any way. These cannot be included with applications. Instead, students should submit a one-page summary and letter of recommendation. Cornell also does not require a statement or certification of finances, as many institutions might.

For questions and more detailed application information, students should contact the admissions office via their website at admissions.cornell.edu. The Early Decision deadline is November 1, while the Regular Decision deadline is January 2.
